The Art of Saying No
How learning to decline opportunities changed everything about my work.
Every yes is a no to something else. This sounds obvious when you read it, but it took me years to truly internalize.
I used to say yes to everything. Every meeting, every project, every opportunity that came my way. I thought it was being helpful, being available, being a good collaborator.
The Cost of Yes
What I didn't realize was the hidden cost. Every yes fragmented my attention. Every commitment diluted my focus. I was doing many things poorly instead of a few things well.
The breakthrough came when I started treating my time as a finite resource. Not in a selfish way, but in a strategic way. If I say yes to this, what am I saying no to?
How I Decide
Now I use a simple framework:
- Does this align with my current priorities?
- Am I the best person for this, or just a convenient one?
- Will I regret not doing this in a year?
- Does this energize me or drain me?
Saying no is hard. But it's a skill worth developing. It's how you protect your ability to do meaningful work.
