Learning from Operators

The best education is working with people who have already done it. Find operators, not just advisors. Met Andy Ballester who built GoFundMe and it changed how I think.

The best education I've ever gotten wasn't from a classroom. It was from working with people who have already done it.

Not advisors who give advice from the sidelines. Operators. People in the trenches. People who know what it actually takes.

Why Operators Are Different

Advisors tell you what they think you should do. Operators show you what they actually did. There's a huge difference.

Working at EyePop with someone who built GoFundMe taught me more in a year than I could have learned in five years of reading books. You see the decisions being made in real time. You understand the tradeoffs.

Find Your Operators

If you can, work for an operator. Even if the pay is lower. Even if the title is smaller. The learning is worth it.

The goal isn't to copy them. It's to understand how they think. That's transferable.
